Note: This analysis will be covering Dr. Nefarious as he was in the original Ratchet & Clank games, and will not include anything such as equipment or feats from the re-imagined game or movie due to how drastically different he is as a character.
Background
The robotic scientist supervillain known throughout the Solana Galaxy didn’t always have a mechanical heart. Nefarious grew up like any normal organic kid, until in ninth-grade during biology class, he met Copernicus Leslie Qwark, who bullied him constantly. Despite this and the fact he wished Qwark was ripped limb from limb so he could riverdance around his corpse, Nefarious still saw him as a friend.
Even with this toxic perception of Qwark being a friend to him, Nefarious was obviously twisted, and sought nothing more than to exterminate all life. He, with his new robot butler Lawrence by his side, created biological monsters known as Amoeboids, and released them to take out anything that lived in Blackwater City on the planet Rilgar. Captain Qwark soon stopped and defeated the evil scientist, and followed him all the way back to his base. Confronting Nefarious, Qwark thought to give him a wedgie for old times sake, but in doing so, accidentally pushed Nefarious into the machinery of his base. Presumed dead, Qwark left, but unbeknownst to him, the machinery transformed Nefarious into a robot.
The hero and villain would later fight many times, leading to Nefarious’s many defeats, gaining even a malfunction in the process. These many battles would even include a Lombax named Ratchet and his robot pal Clank. Whether fighting for control over time or turning all “squishies” into robots, Nefarious was a ruthless enemy, and one of the many heroes of the galaxy’s deadliest. Though through his many chaotic adventures, he would eventually team up with Qwark, Ratchet, and Clank. Even after throwing any possible friendship between them away when their goal was accomplished, Nefarious still missed them, perhaps gaining a soft spot for them in his cold, metal heart.

Equipment
Robot Body
As a robot, Nefarious’s body is superior to most squishies when it comes to power and durability. He can also survive with his head detached from his body.
Energy Blasters
Nefarious possesses dual energy blasters that shoot out streams of energy that can be used effectively when moved around to cover as much space as possible. He also has another blaster that fires energy shots that ricochet off surfaces.
Annihilator Blades
A pair of green blades attached to Nefarious’s arms that he uses for slashing attacks. He can also detach them and throw them at enemies before it comes back to him like a boomerang.
Nanotech
Nanotech is a piece of technology that can be found living in organic beings and machinery. They are tiny nanobots, which can heal Nefarious and repair his body whenever he takes damage. However, he doesn’t have an unlimited supply of it.
GrummelNet Weapons
Weapons sold by Grummel Net Industries, or GrummelNet for short, which Nefarious used while teaming up with Ratchet, Clank, and Qwark. While they have a limited supply of ammo, they pack a punch. The following is a list of all the GrummelNet weapons that Nefarious can use:
- Combuster: A blaster that fires high-velocity plasma balls. Its elite upgrade lets it fire three plasma balls at once. It has a maximum ammo capacity of 150.
- Darkstar Fission Tether: A defensive weapon that releases electric tethers that rip through enemies. Its elite upgrade lets it increase the range of its electricity. It has a maximum ammo capacity of 60.
- Thundersmack: A weather machine that generates traveling lightning storms that strike enemies with electricity. Its elite upgrade lets it create five more small clouds by the original one. It has a maximum ammo capacity of 20.
- Arc Lasher: A kinetic energy whip that stuns enemies that are lashed with electricity for as long as it’s connected to them. Its elite upgrade lets it increase its reach. It has a maximum ammo capacity of 30.
- Mr. Zurkon: A synthenoid that flies around and fires blasts at enemies while trash talking them. Its elite upgrade lets it self-destruct after taking enough damage or after a certain amount of time to create an explosion and damage any nearby enemies. It has a maximum ammo capacity of 2.
- Warmonger: A rocket launcher that shoots raritanium-tipped warheads that explode upon impact and vaporize almost anything. Its elite upgrade lets it home in on enemies. It has a maximum ammo capacity of 10.
- Plasmabomb Launcher: A launcher weapon that lobs grenades that explode with deadly plasma. Its elite upgrade lets it create a second explosion after the first. It has a maximum ammo capacity of 30.
- OmegaTech Frost Cannon: A cryoweapon that unleashes a powerful blizzard that freezes enemies. Its elite upgrade lets it freeze enemies more quickly than before. It has a maximum ammo capacity of 30.
- Pyro Blaster: A flamethrower that produces a stream of flames to burn enemies. Its elite upgrade lets it increase the range of its flames. It has a maximum ammo capacity of 60.
- Blitzer: A pair of raritanium boxing gloves that lets Nefarious charge forward and perform a powerful striking attack against enemies. Its elite upgrade lets it propel Nefarious forward like a rocket at enemies. It has a maximum ammo capacity of 36.
- Critter Strike: A molecular reconfiguring weapon that fires continuous beams or charged blasts that turn enemies into pigs. Bigger enemies take longer to transform, and it has modifications that allow it to turn them into sheep or T-rexes. No matter which animal it transforms them into, its elite upgrade lets it make those animals be able to breathe fire and ally with Nefarious. It has a maximum ammo capacity of 60.
Gadgets
Nefarious possesses multiple types of gadgets used for utility moreso than combat. They can be used indefinitely without worry of running out of any sort of ammo. The following is a list of all the gadgets Nefarious can use:
- Hookshot: A grappling device that shoots out an energy tether that Nefarious can use to swing on things or grab onto others to hang and get closer to them.
- Grind Boots: A pair of boots that let Nefarious grind on rails or ice.
- Vac-U 4000: A vacuum that sucks in objects or others and can even launch them out. It can also break open weak objects, rotate switches, store tiny things thanks to its ability to shrink them, and heal others via a nanotech dispersal unit inside of it.
- Glob Lobber: A lobbing gadget that shoots out purple globs of viscious paste that weigh things down.
- Quake Hammer: A jackhammer gadget that smashes through obstacles such as weak floors and rocks.
- Jet Pack: A basic jet pack that grants flight and allows strong boosted tackles.
- Reflector: A defensive gadget that creates a shield for protection and even deflects energy-based attacks.
Cloaker
A cloaking device manufactured by GrummelNet. It turns Nefarious invisible to get out of enemy sight, and he can use it to sneak up on them before performing a surprise attack with his Cloak & Dagger technique. Like with other GrummelNet technology though, it can only be used so many times due to it running on some sort of ammo. Nefarious can only use it 8 times, and each use lasts around 30 seconds.
Hypersonic Brainwave Scrambler
An invention of Nefarious’s that can shrink in size to be more portable until it’s ready to be used. It’s main method of attacking is releasing sonic waves at enemies while flying around and chasing them, but it can also fire beams of sonic energy, create shock waves on the ground, which can summon allies to fight alongside it, fire condensed sonic bursts, form electrical forcefields, or trap enemies in energy bubbles. The machine also follows Nefarious’s commands.
RYNO VI Protosuit
A robotic suit that’s part of the “Rip Ya A New One” series of weapons: weapons that are considered to be some of the most deadly tactical offensive weaponry ever created. It can be used for standard melee combat, but it can also fire a barrage of powerful missiles. It does require ammo though, having a maximum capacity of 12, with each burst of missiles consuming 1.
Powers & Abilities
Flight
Beneath Nefarious’s feet are jet boosters that grant him flight. While not exactly flight, he can also double jump and levitate through meditation.
Afterimage Creation
Nefarious is capable of projecting holograms to slash at enemies with, which he can launch out from himself or summon all around him.
Energy Manipulation
As a machine, Nefarious can utilize energy in combat in various ways, such as firing heated blasts or continuous beams from his hands, lobbing energy grenades that create devastating shock waves, release other ranged shock wave attacks, creating a giant ball of energy that homes in on enemies, erupting energy from the ground, launching out a stream of energy that rains down from above, or shooting massive beams that he can leave in place while he does other things.
Forcefield Creation
Creation
By releasing a white light that stays in place, Nefarious can create objects, such as a barrage of missiles that rain down on enemies.

Weaknesses
Nefarious’s most notorious tick is how he malfunctions and plays a soap opera titled “Lance and Janice”, and sometimes other shows on occasion. This freezes him up, and tends to happen when he has an outburst of rage, takes a severe blow to the head, or even at random, though usually he’ll get out of it if he is whacked. Luckily, this never happens in the middle of a battle. Besides that, he is arrogant of himself and thinks he’s better than pretty much everyone, and can even act a bit childish over his own cleverness. The weapons and technology by GrummelNet also have a finite source of ammo, and the same goes for nanotech. If he takes too many hits and runs out of it, he’s more prone to taking fatal blows. He’s also really bad at singing and directing.
