MegaMan Volnutt VS Quote (Mega Man VS Cave Story)



MegaMan Volnutt, the first class Digger and Purifier Unit Carbon from Mega Man Legends.


Quote, the silent robot soldier who has one tale to tell in his Cave Story.


There are very few things cooler than a robot with tons of guns. These two use their wide arsenal of firearms and gadgets to discover the truth of their past and who they really are, all the while saving the world they don’t truly know or understand. They could bear to remember their conflicts in the many battles they had forgotten about, facing off against old threats they’ve met yet again to stop for good, but could these amnesiac machines with real hearts bear to stop each other?


Note

The main sources used for MegaMan Volnutt will include his appearances in the original two Mega Man Legends games, as well as Rockman DASH: 5tsu no Shima no Daibouken!, a phone game that takes place between both Legends games. Feats from The Misadventures of Tron Bonne that Volnutt should scale to will be included too, as the events of this game take place first in the timeline. Finally, weapons and abilities from crossover series, such as Tatsunoko vs. Capcom and Super Smash Bros., will also be included. As for Quote, the NICALiS translation of Cave Story, including Curly Story and remakes like Cave Story+ and Cave Story 3D, will be his primary source, along with how he’s shown to use certain weapons in the indie crossover game Blade Strangers. How Curly Brace uses her arsenal will also be touched upon, since they use the exact same weapons in Cave Story.


MegaMan Volnutt

The title of Mega Man has existed for thousands of years. Throughout the classic era’s time of constant war between humans and robots, the planet was eventually met with a flood so great that what remained were only islands. On what little land was left were a race of artificial humans known as Carbons. These people were made of human flesh, but capable of modifying their bodies with mechanical components for excavation or combat. While all of humanity seemed to have been wiped out in the flood, a few humans had remained on the moon space station colony called the Elysium before such an event. However, most of the humans on board died somehow, leaving only the Master and his assistant, a Carbon named MegaMan Trigger.


Seeing as he was the only human left, being on board the Elysium for more than 3,000 years without knowing the warm life of the Carbons, the Master decided that the planet was for them. While the Master would soon perish after finally going to Terra itself, he gave one last order to his assistant: destroy the Master System that Elysium housed. This system was in place to control the population of the Carbons, with another feature that would eradicate the entire race and replace them with cloned humans should all humans on board the Elysium die. It was the Master’s wish to set the Carbons free, but the Mother Unit of all the Elysium’s systems, Sera, was in charge of defending it at all costs. Trigger was inclined to fulfill his dying friend’s last wish, despite going against Sera and being a Purifier Unit who was also in charge of protecting it.


After a hard-fought battle, Trigger and Sera’s duel ended in a standstill. Trigger was very weak, and his body couldn’t take any more damage without resulting in death. To save his life, he was reverted back to an infant by Yuna, another Mother Unit. His parameters were reset, and thus, his memories were erased. Before fully reverting, Trigger had put his most essential memories into a robot monkey called Data so that they wouldn’t be scanned or tampered with. Both Trigger and Sera would remain unconscious, being sealed away by Yuna, who remained neutral in their conflict. After several years, Trigger was uncovered and helped by the Caskett family, with the family’s daughter Roll giving the newly reborn Carbon a new name based on her favorite video game character: MegaMan Volnutt.


Volnutt began his new life as a Digger, who would find Quantum Refractors to use as coin and a power source for civilization. Along the way of this seemingly new simple life, he would fight evil Reaverbots, foil the Bonne family of pirates from their usual stealing, and rediscover what his original purpose in life was. After saving the Carbons from extinction from MegaMan Juno, Volnutt had gotten his memories back when reencountering Sera and Yuna. The final showdown on the moon with Sera was intense, but Volnutt was victorious and successfully stopped her from activating the Master System. However, while Sera did learn what the Master and Volnutt’s reasons were for letting the Carbons live, this didn’t stop them and Yuna from being stranded on the moon with their only hopes of returning home being two girls, Roll and Tron, who both have crushes on Volnutt… Rest assured, MegaMan Volnutt will get off the moon… eventually… maybe…

Imagine waking up in an underground cavern with no memories of who you were. How would you respond to the hostile environment you found yourself in? If you're the protagonist of a Metroidvania game, you’d probably steal a gun and start blasting to figure out what your purpose in life was. Long ago, an artifact called the Demon Crown was made and sealed within a floating island. Created by the hateful Ballos, the crown when worn would grant their wearer great power. Due to this, it was sought after by numerous countries of the world. They all would send their army of robot soldiers to collect the Demon Crown and return it, slaughtering many of the race called Mimiga in the process. However, during the conflict, there existed an unknown party whose goal was to destroy the crown so that no one may use it, hopefully stopping the terrorization of the island. They would send two armed recon robots: an upbeat girl named Curly Brace and a silent, but very kind, boy who simply goes by Quote.


Quote was someone whose actions spoke louder than words. He and Curly arrived at the island much later, with the place in ruins from the actions of the new wearer of the Demon Crown: Miakid. After a fierce battle, Quote and Curly were able to mortally wound the human, but they didn’t come out of it unscathed. Due to their injuries, both robots were incapacitated and separated, being in a deep slumber for ten whole years.


Once ten years had gone by, the next user of the Demon Crown had begun running havoc across the island. In particular, Fuyuhiko Date, better known simply as the Doctor, had the goal to enslave the Mimiga race, making them rabid through the use of special red flowers and using them in an army in his quest to take over the world. Having remained undisturbed throughout the years, Quote would wake up to a whole new life. He had lost his memories after the battle with Miakid, but still possessed the righteous heart he had before. While saving as many Mimiga as he could, he tried to remember who he really was. He would meet again with Curly. Brief conflict began, but the two teamed up afterward.


Quote and Curly would eventually remember why they were created. Despite their failure in the past to secure the destruction of the Demon Crown, they would make up for it by opposing the Doctor. Quote would be known for his successful mission in killing the Doctor, even after he possessed the Core of the island. However, this also caused the island to begin plummeting to the surface world, causing all life on the island and those below to be in danger. As Quote and Curly escaped, they discovered Ballos had been sealed away within the island and was part of the reason for its fall. Without his death, the Demon Crown would continue to be remade, but Ballos never wanted any of this. As someone who grew pure hatred for humanity betraying his original kind self, all he asked of the two robots was to kill him so that his magical force couldn’t be used to hurt anymore. With his malice flickering out, Quote and Curly had done as he wished, stopping the island’s destruction. The world was saved, but they only had one mission left: find a new home that they could call their own and live in peace.

To begin, Volnutt’s maximum capabilities for attack potency and durability are pretty simple to define. It’s funny how Sera was upstaged by a Reaverbot boss, but despite her meteor summoning, that’s nothing compared to the Rush Rammoo creating a storm around Forbidden Island for at least 30 years. The results range from 399 to 589 gigatons of TNT, but this is Large Island Level either way. Some can argue this could be stronger, but let’s keep it there as we bring up Quote’s strongest stuff.


Quote also seems to be pretty straight forward. Scaling to the Core of the island the game takes place in, it is the reason the island can keep staying afloat, which would equal 3.17 megatons of TNT when it’s all said and done, or Small City Level+. However, you can argue for higher, as the island was going to crash into the surface world thanks to the Core’s destruction, but also Ballos’s magical force since the island was saved upon his death. In Cave Story 3D’s normal ending, we finally get to see how bad it would have been for the surface if the island had crashed, which would be a massive explosion that is visibly comparable to mountains in the background. Despite all of this, the likelihood of this reaching Volnutt’s Large Island Level power and durability is very low, so Volnutt still has the edge there.


Speed is a bit interesting for these two. Quote is capable of dodging Ballos’s lightning and the Nemesis is said to shoot lightning to attack. This funnily makes Quote comparable to the speed of his fastest weapon’s projectiles. Volnutt is a weirder case, as he himself is slower than Quote. Having dodged Sera’s meteors, this would be Mach 33, much lower than lightning dodging. But as for Volnutt’s Shining Laser, this is functionally the same as a real laser beam. This makes him faster than Quote at their fastest attacking speeds, and is a way for him to counteract that speed advantage. That said, this is the only option to potentially be faster, and Volnutt still has to aim the thing and fire before Quote does anything. It should also be mentioned that the Spur’s beams seem more akin to energy shots, since its level 1 shots are just energy bullets. But anyway, there’s a lot more equipment to talk about besides just the Nemesis, Spur, or Shining Laser.


Equipment & Abilities

Let’s get this out of the way and just say that Volnutt has many more weapons than Quote. If you were to give Quote all of the weapons listed, even though he isn’t able to have them all at the same time due to how some are obtained, they don’t come close to matching Volnutt’s Special Weapons when it comes to numbers. Quote does have some things Volnutt doesn’t, such as bubble projectiles, flying stars, fireballs, and bolts of lightning, but that’s all that’s different. Volnutt also has energy blasts, missiles, rapid-fire shots, beams, even a blade of his own. While some do function differently, like their swords, there’s a lot more that Volnutt has that Quote doesn’t than vice versa.


Some of this includes many different types of shields. While Quote could use the Bubbline to trade with projectile attacks, Volnutt has so many passive shields that are incredibly effective in this fight, such as his Life Shield or Defense Shield. Some of the biggest ones are the Flame Barrier and Light Barrier, which would negate fire and electric attacks from the Fireball and Nemesis respectively. The Snake also attacks with fireballs, but it does have the feature of passing through things until it strikes an enemy, along with the Whimsical Star, so you could argue it’d ignore the Flame Barrier. However, then you need to go over Quote’s weapon issue again.


Ideally, Quote’s weapon layout for a fight would be the Spur, Super Missile Launcher, Fireball, Bubbline, and then either the Blade or Nemesis. Of those, the Fireball and Nemesis are useless, so that only leaves four options, and the Snake is not one of them if you were to give Quote his ultimate weapon: the Spur. And even then, Volnutt has a counter to that as well with his Shield Arm creating an energy absorbing barrier. All of the Spur’s attacks would be nullified, so the only reliable weapons Quote can wield are the Super Missile Launcher, Bubbline, and Blade. The Nemesis’s lightning speed attacks and the ultimate power of the Spur just end up being terrible options against Volnutt when they’re some of the best weapons in his kit. If there was one advantage Quote had for his weapons, it’s that he sure can switch them out on the fly much faster. Since Volnutt uses a Special Weapon on his right arm, he needs to take it off and swap it out even in games like Tatsunoko vs. Capcom. Meanwhile, Quote can change to another weapon pretty much instantly. This does give him the chance to use the Spur if Volnutt isn’t already equipped with the Shield Arm, but it still is a net negative for Quote in the end.


As for other useful abilities and how they’d interact with each other, they both possess some sort of sense to help realize enemies are nearby. Volnutt’s Alarm Lamp is better and more consistent throughout his games, but that isn’t to say Quote enhanced senses wouldn’t be useful. He would probably be able to get a feeling of when Volnutt might try to surprise attack him when he goes invisible with the Chameleon Net, while Quote doesn’t really have any equipment or abilities that would make having the Alarm Lamp very useful to have, except maybe for Quote’s Booster v2.0. Speaking of which, the Booster v2.0 also gives Quote an advantage in maneuverability. Volnutt’s Dash Shoes SP granting higher jumps and grounded jet skating doesn’t stack up to a rocket that can propel Quote in any direction, along with flight. Heck, if you gave Quote the Machine Gun, that’s another movement option on the table, though he’d probably want to stick with the Spur. Volnutt’s lock-on for shooting would be useful when dealing with those movement options though. As for their healing options, it should be quite clear that Volnutt’s 99 uses to heal, even if slightly, will manage to be better than Quote having only one full restorative item.


Finally, let’s talk about the ammo and attributes of their weapons. Volnutt uses a single source for most of his Special Weapons, and while he does have a Hyper Cartridge to restore, Quote only has to worry about permanently running out of ammo with his Super Missile Launcher. His other weapons either have infinite ammo or regenerate it when they’re not in use. However, another trait his weapons possess does pose a problem. The way their experience is handled means that as Quote gets hit, they’ll become weaker. The only weapons not to follow this are the Nemesis, which is nullified by the Light Barrier, and the Spur, which is manually charged to higher levels. Quote’s weaponry will become weaker the longer the fight goes on as he takes damage, which makes finding a finishing blow a lot harder when at some point he’ll have to rely entirely on the Spur. And with Volnutt’s superior healing, he can afford to make the fight last that long as Quote also uses up his one healing item to not go down so easily. But if Quote does heal, that’s just more potential experience he could lose from taking more hits.


Training & Experience

This is a pretty funny one, since they both had amnesia and all. Volnutt has had experience fighting Revearbots for years ever since becoming a Digger, and his adventures in both Legends games had him dealing with beings who were sealed away due to their immense power who had the goal of wiping out humanity. He’s also dealt with the Bonne pirates, who were usually successful before dealing with blue boy over here. Volnutt has done a lot for the little games in his series, and he’s fully capable of deducing weak points in his enemies at that. Compared to that, Quote has admittedly only ever been the savior of the island. He’s helped the Mimiga from the Doctor, and even put an end to Ballos, someone who’s lived for a very long time, but that still doesn’t stack up to Volnutt’s time on the battlefield.


Conclusion

Put simply, Volnutt has a lot of advantages and a lot of ways to deal with Quote’s own main advantage. With much higher attack potency and durability at Large Island Level, he can take any hit from Quote, even factoring in the island’s explosion in Cave Story 3D. Volnutt may be slower, but he has ways around it. While the Alarm Lamp won’t help with the majority of Quote’s equipment or abilities, it will be useful when handling the speed difference. Volnutt’s lock-on capabilities and the Shining Laser’s speed being higher than Quote’s are also key here, especially since the Shining Laser is both his fastest and strongest weapon. Sure, he has to aim and fire it while Quote is moving about with his greater maneuverability, but one lucky hit is all he needs. Also, even with Quote’s enhanced senses, it still might be possible for the Chameleon Net to trick him up from time to time too, giving Volnutt the chance to hit him hard.


You could make a similar argument with the Nemesis being lightning and that Volnutt would be incapable of dodging, at least if it weren’t for the fact that his Light Barrier would nullify the attack. His other barriers being able to bring down the number of options Quote can use against him is also important, not just for the obvious defensive uses, but also the fact this might surprise Quote. Any hesitation can be fatal with the Shining Laser in play, and with Volnutt being stronger and more durable than Quote, many of Quote’s weapons will become weaker as a result through being hit many times in a drawn out battle, making it even harder to score a fatal blow. This also isn’t considering the healing items they both have, and how Volnutt’s are more numerous.


There’s no way Quote would be able to avoid every attack, including the Shining Laser, and whittle Volnutt down through 99 uses of his Energy Canteen before finally finishing him off. In the end, Quote can only rely on his speed and very few weapons to take down his opponent, but it isn’t possible with Volnutt’s incredible power, durability, and arsenal. MegaMan Volnutt finally has his chance to shine, but don’t Quote me on that.
