Grim (The Grim Adventures of Billy & Mandy) – DEATH BATTLE! Analysis

Grimuel “Grim” C. Reaper was born into the Underworld over 66 million years ago. When he attended Doomsday Junior High School, he was continuously bullied and lacked many friends. However, those who were his friends shaped him to be the skeleton he is today.

One day, his school was running an election to see who would become the next Reaper. Grim, his best friend Velma Green, and the school bully, the Boogeyman, all decided to enter. The goal was to be the scariest, and the audience would choose who scared them the most. Despite trying his hardest, Grim and Boogey failed on-stage while Velma did an excellent job. She was being voted to win until Boogey cheated and got rid of her votes and replaced them with his.

With Grim finding out about this later, he stopped Boogey from his cheating and then destroyed the votes. Grim then did the same as what the school bully did and began putting cheated votes in the pot. Velma went downstairs where the votes were being taken place and saw what Grim was doing and ran away crying. Unknown to her, Grim was actually putting in votes for her. After losing one of his only friends, Grim became furious, and borrowed the Reaper’s scythe to take revenge on Boogeyman.

His revenge actually scared the audience, even more so than Velma’s audition. With the entire audience then deciding to change their votes, Grim was elected to be the next Reaper. However, this made Velma hate Grim, thinking he cheated his way to become the Reaper. They did make up eventually when she found out what really happened.

Many years later, while on his Reaper duty, Grim visited the house of an idiotic kid named Billy. Grim was their to reap the soul of Billy’s pet hamster, Mr. Snuggles. When Billy’s friend Mandy stepped in and opposed Grim, they made a deal. They would play a game, and if Grim won, he would get the hamster’s soul, but if Billy and Mandy won, they would keep him and Grim would have to be their best friend for all eternity. They ended up playing limbo in Limbo and Grim lost, forcing him to be Billy and Mandy’s playmate forever.

The Reaper’s Scythe

Grim’s signature scythe that he named Jody. He uses it to reap the souls of those he cuts, and it allows Grim to use most of his magical powers. It can pretty much cut through anything and Grim describes it as being extremely powerful, even powerful enough to kill minor things when no one is even using it. He can use his scythe to deflect projectiles, tear open the ground (things that get trapped can be turned into monsters and he can raise structures such as castles from the torn ground, he can also manipulate the ground without his scythe and make the torn ground lead to the Underworld), shoot beams (he has many types of beams, such as a melting beam, tractor beam, burning beam, and disintegration beam, he can also shoot beams from out of his hands), erupt deadly energy from the ground, create air currents (he can also create wind without his scythe), drive on it like a motorcycle, change a person’s point of view (this can also cause them to randomly see glimpses of the future), create protective barriers, change a person’s age, pogo around, enchant objects (he can also enchant things without his scythe), brainwash others, cast sleeping spells (it puts one into such a deep sleep that even being thrown around and extremely loud noises won’t wake them up, he also has an awakening spell), clean things, vaporize the area around him with a burst of energy, summon fire, magnetize objects, paddle through liquids, even lava, alter the space-time continuum, summon monsters (and they do follow his orders), summon creatures who drag others beneath the ground (he can also summon creatures without his scythe, trap someone in place with claws of a monster, or do it unwillingly when he has nice dreams), resurrect the deceased as zombies, grant superpowers, erase memories, create explosions, change someone’s personality (even transferring one person’s personality to another, which can also result in a change of clothing), shapeshift people (he can also shapeshift himself without the need of his scythe, which can let him avoid being majorly damaged, and shapeshift only half of his body if he wants), scan someone to find out their age, fix objects (the object will be affected by supernatural power and it can affect others who interact with it), control the weather, generate light, read and show a person’s thoughts, mend wounds and illnesses, fly in the air (he can also fly without his scythe), combine multiple things to create one new lifeform, manipulate water (he can also control water without his scythe, even at a miniscule level using saliva, allowing him to perform a wet willie that affects the inside of a victim’s head), see through things using an X-ray, call someone from the Underworld over, shave, teleport (he can also teleport without his scythe and forcibly teleport things away), play baseball, golf, or fetch, change the sizes of other beings (he can also change his own size without his scythe and change the size of the scythe itself), transform his scythe into different objects, summon electricity, make inanimate objects come to life (he can also reverse the effects and do it without using his scythe), time travel (he can also forcibly send others through time), and cut through time and space to create portals (he can also make portals without the need of his scythe, including being able to draw a picture of one while saying a spell to make it real, use his scythe on a door to make it a portal, make a portal that leads to whoever Grim is trying to track down, stun someone to automatically create a portal behind them, forcing them to be trapped in wherever it leads to, and reflect sunlight to create a cosmic sinkhole, which sends the person who gets sucked into it to a random location, whether it be on Earth or in another world). He can call the scythe to him by either summoning it from out of thin air or whistling to make it fly to him. He can use his scythe without even needing to touch it and hold it in his mouth to do minor actions and spells incase he’s just a head. The scythe’s magic can also phase through solid objects until it hits the target Grim is seeking. If the scythe is overloaded with static electricity, it will send the person holding it to a random great beyond, with there being hundreds of great beyonds. The scythe itself is somewhat sentient and can be used to open up Grim’s trunk. Grim can feel what the scythe feels, and is able to tell what is going on in the area it is in even if he isn’t there. The most interesting attribute that the scythe has is that whatever it cuts, it will make that person or object unrepairable. Also, it can turn into a lightsaber. No joke.

A chest that Grim keeps all his incredibly evil and dangerous magical objects in for safekeeping. Despite how it looks on the outside, the inside of it is actually a parallel dimension. With it being a parallel dimension, he has access to about anything he would ever desire in it, such as an Underworld spider egg, voodoo dolls, Merlin’s underwear, the Holy Grail, the head of Medusa, a magic lamp containing his mother, and a lot more random junk. The most notable items in the trunk are a universal remote control, a supply of Mojo Balls, and an ancient artifact called the Left Hand of Horror. He’s able to summon the trunk at any time. The trunk also has a curse on it, which makes the person who opens it grow chicken feathers, and he can magically chain the trunk to prevent others from using his stuff.

Robe

Grim wears this robe everyday. While it can be used like a parachute, it is also similar to his trunk where he keeps supernatural objects. This includes a flea that turns werewolves back into humans, a literal bookworm that makes one smarter by taking over all bodily functions if one eats it, fish food that increases the size of whoever eats it, the Mask of the Beast, the Bone of Barnacles, and a temporal displacement orb. He also has a zipper on his robe that can be taken off. Anything attached to the zipper that gets unzipped will be instantly cut in half. Likewise, anything that gets zipped while attached to the zipper will instantly be connected together. It can also close or open up surfaces. He can summon his robe whenever he wants.

Mask of the Beast

This mask, when put on someone who is normally mean, will slowly transform the wearer into a monster for every negative action they perform. It can’t be taken off by normal means. The only way to take it off is to act nice, in which the victim will slowly turn back to normal. If they continue to act negatively, they will turn 100% beast.

Universal Remote Control

A remote control that can alter the space-time continuum, whether he wants to rewind time, fast-forward through time, or pause time completely. The effects of the remote don’t affect the person using it or anyone that person doesn’t want affected.

Mojo Balls

Along with the curse on his trunk, if opened, the trunk will spew out many Mojo Balls across the entire universe. Mojo Balls contain incredible dark magical power and those who touch them will be infected by supernatural rage, making them even deadlier. Mojo Balls also allow Grim to perform special attacks in battle.

A magical orb that shows events of the past and future Grim when he gazes into it.

Left Hand of Horror

Also known as Horror’s Hand, this mystical artifact projects the fears of its target into reality. If someone can overcome their fears, they will no longer be affected by it, and they will be able to control its power and use it against others. It also has an on and off switch. Grim is one of the few who are able to use it. However, before Grim obtained it, it was somewhat sentient, giving the test to see who could conquer their fears all by itself.

Being the Grim Reaper and all, Grim can control souls in a variety of ways. While his scythe can reap the souls of others, Grim is also able to manipulate souls using his hands as well. He can send souls into the afterlife or let them go free in the physical world. Souls that are freed can possess and empower objects as their new bodies.

Life Manipulation

Grim can control how long someone lives by using a person’s hourglass, manufactured by Father Time, which he can summon and dismiss at a moment’s notice. By adding more sand into an hourglass, he can increase how long someone lives (he can also increase it by simply turning the hourglass upside down), and removing sand will decrease how long someone lives. If he breaks someone’s hourglass, that person will cease to exist. If he shakes someone’s hourglass, that person will rapidly become younger and older. Since he can control how long someone lives, this also lets him know when someone is about to die so he can reap their soul. He can also grant immortality and fully revive the dead without the need of an hourglass.

Besides using his scythe, Grim can summon and control fire in multiple ways. He can surround the entire area around him in fire (this can also cause Underworld creatures to appear), usually when angered, or burn things held in his hand. He can also appear and disappear by using fire, summon things (he can also make things disappear into thin air, but without the fire effect), spew vicious flames from out of his eyes, or put his eyes on fire to look cool.

Body Manipulation

Due to being a skeleton, Grim can bend his body in abnormal ways. When Grim’s head isn’t on his body, the individual parts can move on their own. In fact, when that does happen, all of the bone parts have a mind of their own. Any head-like object that goes on his body replaces his head. This works vice versa as well.When in pieces, he can reconstruct himself. He can remove specific parts of his body (even without using his hands via magic), reattach removed bones, and blow himself up to fake others out. His body is also really good at making music and sound effects. The top of Grim’s head is removable, which lets him be able to put stuff in his head or for others to see his memories if they look inside. He is also able to open up his ribs, which can almost fit Billy and Irwin’s entire bodies.

Another advantage of being the Grim Reaper is that Grim can live forever. This even goes to the point where he outlived time itself.

Telekinesis

Grim can lift objects and people up using telekinesis. This can prevent people from moving against their will and he can manipulate their movements, even pulling things in a near instant. It also helps him retrieve important bones in his body if they get knocked off or maintain himself if too many bones get detached. Probably one of the more gruesome ways to use this ability is for him to rip off a victim’s limbs and beat them senselessly with them while also giving those limbs a pair of gauntlets for a bigger beating.

Possession

Grim can possess other living things by, in his own words, “jumping into somebody’s head”. He can possess someone for as long as he pleases, but he can lose control if he bumps his head on something hard enough. The possessor also gets the abilities of those they possess.

Regeneration

Grim can regenerate from most injuries, whether it be from broken bones, having his face clawed off, having his head cut in half, getting torn to pieces, having his entire body crushed, or even having his head blown up.

Mojo Attack

After getting enough Mojo Balls, Grim can perform a Mojo Attack. This attack makes Grim spin in circles for a long period of time, shredding whatever is in his way.

Mojo Combo

Grim can also use collected Mojo Balls to perform a combo attack. This traps the opponent and Grim attacks incredibly fast as he and his victim slowly float upwards into the air. His opponent is only freed from the combo attack when Grim finishes it off with a powerful kick.

Mojo Meltdown

After getting even more Mojo Balls, Grim can perform a Mojo Meltdown. Grim uses his scythe to cut open a portal to the Underworld. He then traps his opponent inside of it, making them deal with the monsters that are awaiting their arrival.

Elimination

A combo attack Grim uses to finish off stunned enemies. He starts with a punch, then a dropkick, then a multi-slash spin attack with his scythe, and finally ending it with a devastating uppercut that launches his opponent.

Slash of the Underworld

Grim’s deadliest attack. He uses the spirits of the dead to increase the size and power of his scythe. He then performs two slashes, dealing devastating damage. The attack also cuts through time and space, creating a portal that releases more spirits.

As mentioned before, most of Grim’s powers come directly from his scythe. Should he lose it, he would be in a dire situation. Although, he can summon it out of thin air, kind of negating this weakness. However, while he can summon his scythe if he loses it, it has been destroyed before, and he would need outside help in order to fix it. And speaking of losing his scythe, Grim gets his scythe stolen a lot. From a headless man who wears a pumpkin on his neck to Abraham Lincoln, almost every character on the show has stolen it. Not to mention, his scythe is extremely easy to use. This can let opponents who steal his scythe be able to use it against him, which has happened before. Most notably, the very same pumpkin-headed man, Jack O’Lantern, threatened to use the scythe’s unique attributes to cut Grim’s head off forever. This led to him having to be rescued by Billy, Mandy, and, unintentionally, Irwin. He also can’t undo his scythe’s own curses unless he was the one who placed them in the first place, making opponents who stole his scythe have an even bigger advantage against him if they were to curse him. This is especially the case since Grim isn’t immune to his scythe’s magic. Like his scythe’s magic, he also isn’t immune to his own fire. Some spells of his have cooldowns, making it so he can’t reuse or undo them for awhile. The effects of his personality changing can be reversed if someone else takes control over them. While it can help him in certain situations as mentioned before, if his scythe is in danger he can be stunned and fall over, leaving himself wide-open. And like his scythe, his trunk can also be used against him. On multiple occasions, someone, mostly Billy, has gone into his trunk and taken out a mysterious item that ends up starting a huge conflict that needs to be solved.

While his bones are very durable, they can easily be detached if he’s hit with a strong enough blow or if someone grabs a part of his body. He also feels the pain of his other bones even if his head is detached from them. If the area around him is too cold his scythe’s magic will be frozen, preventing him from casting spells. If he tries to use his magic on something with too much nature in it, it will also fail. The scythe also runs on a battery, and must be charged in order to be usable. The scythe is also unable to reap the souls of the undead. Forcing someone to wear the Mask of the Beast can easily backfire if they aren’t willing to act nice to turn back to normal, as Grim got beaten up by Mandy after she had become 100% beast. Since he’s made of bones, dogs love to chase and chew on him, excluding Cerberus, since Mandy taught the beast to not attack Grim. While his supply of Mojo Balls can make Grim very deadly, they can also infect him with so much supernatural rage that he becomes insane. Plus, he’s not the only one who can use them, so someone who gets a hold of a few Mojo Balls can use it against him. When death is upon someone, that doesn’t mean they’ll automatically lose. People such as Mrs. Doolin and General Skarr have escaped death itself due to outwitting Grim. And while he is by no means an idiot, he is quite gullible sometimes. Finally, Grim is very cocky. This is due to him being the Grim Reaper and thinking he's better than most. His cockiness has put him in many bad situations and is the main reason he lost and was forced to become Billy and Mandy’s best friend in the first place. He was actually the one who came up with the condition that if he lost, he would be their best friend forever, not Billy or Mandy.
