Background
Captain Olimar is a Hocotation pilot from the planet Hocotate. He works at Hocotate Freight, a shipping company that makes deliveries to even the deepest parts of space. Sometimes though, it gets stressful and he just wants some alone time. One day, while on an intergalactic vacation in his S.S. Dolphin, his ship collided against a meteor, causing him to crash-land on a nearby planet which would later be called PNF-404. When Olimar finally regained consciousness, he found that 30 important parts of the Dolphin were lost. He would need to find these pieces in order to safely escape the planet and return to Hocotate.
Luckily for him, he discovered a friendly species that were a hybrid between plant and animal: Pikmin. Naming them off of a Hocotation food, Olimar received the help from these little guys to retrieve his ship’s missing parts. He had to do this within 30 days, as his life-support systems only lasted that long, and PNF-404 was filled with oxygen, which is poisonous to Hocotations. After securing all 30 parts in that 30 day time limit, Olimar successfully took off and returned home to Hocotate, but this wouldn’t be the last he’d see of Pikmin or the planet. He would later have other adventures on the planet, usually to find treasure, and he would always turn to the native Pikmin to assist him to fulfill his goals.

Equipment
Pikmin
Pikmin are a hybrid species of plant and animal that Olimar discovered when he first crash-landed on PNF-404, though they also can be found on other planets. They follow his every command through the use of a whistle and help in many different tasks, such as digging up objects and carrying stuff, including bomb rocks, which they can use to blow things up. They also help him in fighting off enemies. Olimar can throw Pikmin onto them, group Pikmin up to swarm at or grab and throw them, or make all Pikmin charge at them at once. These tactics also apply to making Pikmin interact with objects. Though they usually attack under Olimar’s command, they can also do it under their own will.
Pikmin attack by either slamming the tops of their heads against enemies, tackling into them, or jumping on them. Latched on Pikmin can also stay on better at the cost of dealing less damage. The strength of these hits, as well as how fast they run and the likeliness of them making mistakes like tripping over, is determined by what stage the tops of their heads are. It goes from leaves, to buds, to flowers. They grow naturally over time, when grouped up with more Pikmin, or when planted in the ground. Although, if they’re planted in the ground for too long, they’ll go under it for awhile before emerging and deleveling back to a leaf Pikmin. If Pikmin find and drink nectar though, they will instantly become flowered. The flowers can also be used to descend slowly when falling. When flowered Pikmin die, sometimes they’ll leave behind seeds that become new Pikmin the next day. Olimar can also grab and swing a Pikmin for a physical attack if he’s up close or link many together to form a chain to strikes enemies and reach edges.
Olimar can bring up to 100 Pikmin onto the field for his adventures, and having that many makes it easier for him to explore and battle enemies. There are many different types of Pikmin that have their own unique attributes, and they can even change types when thrown into Candypop Buds, which produce seeds of that type that Olimar can pluck. The following is a list of all the Pikmin types Olimar can command:

The following is a list of all the Pikmin types Olimar can command:
- Red Pikmin: Pikmin with long noses that deal more damage compared to other Pikmin types. They are also immune to fire and can stomp small ones out.
- Yellow Pikmin: Pikmin with large ears that get thrown much higher. They can also dig faster compared to other Pikmin types, are immune to electricity, and can conduct electricity to create a chain with others of their type, which also instantly flowers them.
- Blue Pikmin: Pikmin with mouths that act as gills, allowing them to breath underwater. They can also swim in water, throw enemies the strongest out of all Pikmin types, save other Pikmin who are drowning by throwing them to land, and are immune to water-based attacks.
- Purple Pikmin: Pikmin that are the largest and strongest of all Pikmin types. They can also carry 10 times more than other types, create shockwaves when landing that stun tougher enemies for five seconds and bring out the physical form of extra-dimensional beings briefly, home in on targets when landing after being thrown, withstand winds that would knock other types over, and don’t panic in scary situations. However, they are the slowest of all types and don’t get thrown as far due to their weight.
- White Pikmin: Pikmin that are small with beady red eyes that let them see buried things. They can also run the fastest out of all Pikmin types, breathe out poison, spit out acid, and are immune to poison. When killed by being eaten, they will eject a poisonous fluid into the eater, hurting them. In most cases, this even kills them instantly.
- Rock Pikmin: Pikmin that look like rocks that deal more damage when thrown than other Pikmin types, but bounce off and only tackle into things once thrown instead of latching onto and smacking them with the tops of their heads. This makes it so they deal less damage over time compared to other types. The exception to this is if they have to climb something in order to attack. They can also survive being crushed and break through hard surfaces such as crystal.
- Winged Pikmin: Pikmin with wings that fly around and can carry objects over obstacles, although they carry them slower than other Pikmin types. They can also avoid being crushed much more easily, carry Olimar and other Pikmin to reach higher places, and slow his descent when falling. However, they deal less damage than other types.
- Bulbmin: Pikmin that are parasitic and have taken over a Bulborb. They are immune to all the elements from previous Pikmin and can breathe underwater. However, they can only be found underground and cannot be taken up to the surface.
Spacesuit
Due to the high levels of poisonous oxygen on PNF-404, Olimar wears a spacesuit for his explorations of the planet. The life-support systems from it can last up to 30 days. Because of this, it also lets him go underwater and be by other poisons without worry of suffocation. Other than that, the spacesuit has other features that help Olimar. It defends him from enemy attacks, but if it takes too much damage, Olimar has to go back to his ship for the day so it can be repaired. It also comes with a forced-sleep mode that activates when he experiences big surprises, an antenna with a light at the top to see better in the dark, and a jetpack that lets him hover around in the air for a maximum of eight seconds before needing to land, though once he does, he can use it again.
Lastly, it comes with a whistle that’s embedded into Olimar’s helmet. When he blows into it, the light from his antenna emits a ring. Pikmin, and others who are assisting him, in that ring who are not already following Olimar, even if they’re above the ground, will go to his side. Recalled Pikmin can even hurt enemies if they’re attached to them. He can also use it to hurt and spin enemies around him, speed Pikmin up briefly, or dismiss his squad of Pikmin to leave them idle or have them interact with things nearby. The ring created also helps Pikmin recover from being set on fire, drowning in water, panicking, being controlled by other enemies, suffocating from poison, being trapped, and being sucked into vortexes.

Onions
Essentially the nests that Pikmin live in. They’re capable of flight, and follow Olimar’s ship when it goes off to orbit PNF-404. They also produce and plant Pikmin seeds into the ground when it absorbs the nutrients from pellets or prey, which Olimar can then pluck to get more Pikmin in his squad. Although, doing so with 100 Pikmin already on the field will put them in the Onion itself. Because of this 100 Pikmin limit, Olimar has to organize his battalion by taking out a certain amount of Pikmin for each type. He can also pluck Pikmin in two other ways. One way has him take longer to pluck them in order to give them more health while the other lets him create an explosion at the cost of them having less health. Should Pikmin die, he can always come back to an Onion and take more out.
There is an Onion for each type, besides Purple Pikmin, White Pikmin, and Bulbmin, but they can merge together to form one Master Onion so that Olimar can organize Pikmin more efficiently. Pellets that match a Pikmin’s type will produce more seeds. If a type of Pikmin becomes extinct, an Onion will produce a single seed to prevent that type from being gone for good.
As mentioned, Purple Pikmin, White Pikmin, and Bulbmin don’t have an Onion of their own. The former two can only be gotten through other types converting into them via Candypop Buds, while the latter can only be obtained in dungeons after Olimar defeats their parent. The former two also stay on Olimar’s ship instead of in Onions due to this, and the latter can’t even leave the dungeons they’re found in. Although, it appears that Purple Pikmin and White Pikmin can stay in the Master Onion.

Upgrades
Upgrades are add-ons that Olimar received during his many trips to PNF-404. These all are useful for either exploration, combat, or both. The following is a list of all the upgrades Olimar has obtained:
- Scorch Guard: Spacesuit upgrade that makes Olimar immune to fire, though strong fire will still push him back.
- Anti-Electrifier: Spacesuit upgrade that makes Olimar immune to electricity, though strong electricity will still push him back.
- Metal Suit Z: Spacesuit upgrade that reduces the damage Olimar’s spacesuit takes by half.
- Napsack: Spacesuit upgrade that lets Olimar fall asleep and be carried by Pikmin to an Onion.
- Rocket Fist: Spacesuit upgrade that gives Olimar the ability to perform a powerful punching combo.
- Rush Boots: Spacesuit upgrade that makes Olimar run much faster, making him capable of keeping up with even flowered White Pikmin.
- Mega Tweeter: Whistle upgrade that increases the range of Olimar’s whistle.
- Pluckaphone: Whistle upgrade that calls Pikmin out of the ground, speeding up the process of plucking them instead of manually doing it one at a time.
- Dodge Whistle: Whistle upgrade that lets Olimar roll alongside his Pikmin in order for them all to dodge attacks.
- Solar System: Miscellaneous upgrade that increases the lighting in dark areas.
- Treasure Gauge: Miscellaneous upgrade that helps Olimar track down treasure with a gauge showing if he’s close to one.
Sprays
Bottles filled with special liquids that can be sprayed for beneficial effects. These are made from the berries of the Burgeoning Spiderwort, with 10 berries equaling one dose. They can also be found randomly in the environment as globs, and Olimar can carry an unlimited number of these. The following is a list of all the sprays Olimar can use:
- Ultra-Spicy Spray: Olimar sprays this on his Pikmin to make them stronger and faster for 40 seconds and bloom them into flowers instantly.
- Ultra-Bitter Spray: Olimar sprays this on enemies to turn them into stone for nine seconds. If they’re defeated, they crumble to pieces and release nectars or more spray globs.
Items
Various one-time use items that have helpful effects. Olimar can get these by getting Pikmin to bring Cupid’s Grenades to an Onion. The following is a list of all the items Olimar can use:
- +10 Pikmin: Makes the Onion create 10 Pikmin seeds of the type Olimar started out with.
- +5 Rare Pikmin: Makes the Onion create 5 Pikmin seeds of the type Olimar didn’t start out with.
- Lightning: Strikes enemies with a bolt of lightning to immobilize them for a bit.
- Lucky Marble: Fills in a random spot on Olimar’s bingo card.
- Rock Storm: Causes four large boulders to plummet onto enemies.
- Enemy Annihilator: Automatically kills all nearby enemies, though tougher ones are unaffected.
- Bomb: Drops a bomb rock in front of Olimar for his Pikmin to use.
- Shuffle: Scrambles the enemy’s bingo card.
- Mine: Drops a mine in front of Olimar, which he can get Pikmin to carry and put on a surface after they’re thrown. When stepped on, it will cause an explosion.
- Warp: Teleports enemies to a random nearby location.
- Macaroon Recovery: Transports Olimar’s macaroon back to the Onion.
S.S. Dolphin II
Olimar’s spaceship, and a later model of his original S.S. Dolphin. It is capable of flying through space at massively faster than light speeds and is used to travel from planet to planet for Olimar’s job at Hocotate Freight. It runs on Sparklium, and can talk with and give advice to him. The top of it can also come off and help Olimar explore in many ways, such as picking up signals, dropping him off to his destinations, a log system full of information from his travels, and retrieving him with his Pikmin and other things when a mission is complete. The top can also function perfectly fine underwater. To bring things back to the ship more easily, Olimar can use a portal ring.
As a later model, it should be capable of the same functions as the original Dolphin. These functions include a ray that puts things into it and fully repairs Olimar’s spacesuit, a radar that shows a map of the area and how many Pikmin Olimar has and where they and other important objects are, a blaster that emits a powerful light to destroy things, a satellite that protects both Olimar and the ship, and a massage machine. It can also automatically repair itself when a part of it is put in front of it and fix anything in itself that may be broken.

Weaknesses
Olimar may command an army of Pikmin, but he can only have 100 out on the field at a time. He also can’t do much by himself should his entire squad get killed, especially since he is incredibly small. He has been in situations before where he had no Pikmin by his side and needed the assistance of others to rescue him. Even then, Pikmin themselves aren’t perfect warriors. They can trip over and leave themselves vulnerable and fool around even in life-threatening situations. Also, when underground for too long, they go under for awhile before coming back up and deleveling back to a leaf Pikmin.
Olimar’s spacesuit’s forced-sleep mode can be used against him by enemies who can manipulate technology. His spacesuit is also not really good at keeping out the cold like a normal spacesuit would. Lastly, since Olimar needs his spacesuit in order to not suffocate due to oxygen, if it takes too much damage, he has to reach his ship so that it can be repaired. If he doesn’t reach it in time, he’s as good as dead. It also doesn’t help that there is a possibility of his helmet breaking in a fight, though he has successfully gone through many adventures without this ever happening.
